The following are examples of projects or programs that I have helped to design. All of them showcase students who are activating their skills and knowledge to effect positive change and make a sustainable impact on their local and global communities.

GREEN GEN JUNIOR

Green Generation - Student Delegation to COP and COY

The first year that this project began in 2015 a group of students and educators (myself included) attended the COP21 in Paris where the Paris Agreement was drafted. The project allows students to activate their knowledge and skills in a myriad of ways, integrating activism, art, science, literacy, political science, and so many other disciplines.

Collaborating with Experts and Learning from Local Wisdom

To learn more about the rainforests as carbon sinks, I collaborated with local Indonesian high school students and teachers to go to Kalimantan. There, we learned from experts in the field of peatland biodiversity and located orangutans in the wild. We also worked alongside Indigenous organizations working to reclaim lands and raise awareness about impacts of conflict palm oil burning on local communities.

Grades 6-8: Collaborating with Local Organizations and Applying Skills

To activate students knowledge and skills at the middle school level (grades 6-8) my colleagues and I designed a project that allowed students to learn how to measure environmental impacts of coal-fired pollution (water, soil, air) and interview members of the local community to learn more about human impacts.

STUDENT PROJECTS

Sustainability = Gender Justice

To authentically learn about sustainability, students must understand the social aspects as well. To explore the intersectionality between gender and sustainability I developed a project for students to host a V-Day event at our school. We partnered with local women's organiations to raise awareness about violence towards women and girls.

Seizing Opportunities to Apply Learning

To encourage students to apply their skills and showcase their individual projects, I have developed programs that connect with local conferences and events. Some of those include:
Bali Clean Energy Forum
Festival Iklim in Jakarta
Conference of Youth (UN)
Sustainable Solutions (Green School Bali) 

Encouraging Agency and Local Connections

Many of the programs I showcase here incorporate student agency and voice. Students are encouraged to find their own ways to apply skills and knowledge locally beyond the school gates. Pictured here are students planting mangroves, part of student-led initiative to learn about climate in Bali.
